If you've picked up one of our "+ Arnica" blends, you've probably wondered what that word is doing on the label. Arnica shows up on a lot of relief products, and most of them never explain it. So here's the honest version β what arnica is, what people use it for, and where we land on it.
What it is
Arnica montana is a yellow, daisy-like flower that grows in the mountains of Europe and parts of North America. People have used preparations of it topically for generations β the classic use is on the kind of tired, worked, "I overdid it" muscles you feel after a long day or a hard session. It's applied to the skin, not taken by mouth (undiluted arnica isn't meant to be swallowed).
The tradition is old and specific: arnica has a long history as a topical for freshly-worked muscles.
What the evidence says (honestly)
Here's where we'll be straight with you: the research on topical arnica is mixed. Some studies suggest a benefit for muscle soreness and bruising; others are smaller or less conclusive. It is not a painkiller, and we're not going to tell you it is one. What we can say is that arnica has a long topical tradition, a lot of people reach for it specifically after exertion, and it pairs naturally with the cooling menthol base we build the Supersonic line around.
- Best thought of as: a traditional topical for freshly-worked muscles.
- Not: a substitute for medical care, or a cure for anything.
- Applied: to unbroken skin, never on open cuts, and away from eyes.
How we use it
In our "+ Arnica" blends, arnica rides alongside menthol and hemp extract. The menthol gives you the immediate cool you feel on contact; the arnica is the part rooted in that older, muscle-focused tradition. We add it to the blends people tend to reach for after the body's been asked to do something β which is exactly why the Ultra + Arnica is our strongest recovery-leaning option.
The short version
Arnica is a traditional topical botanical for tired muscles, with a real history and honestly mixed modern evidence. We include it because it fits how people actually use our rollers β after effort β and because it plays well with menthol. If you want the cooling hit without it, the plain Supersonic and Ultra are right there.
